How UAE trademark registration works in 2026

The current Ministry of Economy and Tourism service card lists AED 750 for standard examination, AED 750 for publication and AED 5,000 for final registration: AED 6,500 in official charges for the standard filing-to-registration stages. A separate official trademark inquiry is AED 350. Agent, power-of-attorney certification/notarisation, translation, opposition and dispute costs are not included.

Registration is not one payment or one decision. The owner and goods or services must be defined, the mark should be searched, the application is examined, accepted marks are published, third parties receive a 30-day opposition window, and the final registration fee is then due.

Official fee map

The amounts below come from the current MoET Register Trademark service card, checked on 20 July 2026.

Fees are charged per application through the applicable classification and filing structure. A multi-class or multi-mark strategy should be costed before filing rather than inferred from one headline total.

Search before filing

A search is a risk screen, not a registration promise. Start with the exact word and logo, then test spelling variants, transliterations, similar-looking and similar-sounding signs, and the relevant goods or services.

The current MoET Trademark Inquiry service lists AED 350 and an immediate service result. That official inquiry should be combined with a legal similarity review where the commercial risk justifies it. A result can miss a conflict created by meaning, pronunciation, visual composition, earlier use, a company or domain name, or a sign filed after the search.

Before filing, fix four facts:

1. the precise owner name and legal form;
2. the mark version to be protected;
3. the goods and services the business will actually use;
4. priority, foreign filing or Madrid Protocol dependencies, if any.

Changing the owner or specification after a deal, reorganisation or launch can create extra filings and recordals. The clean route is to align the application with the real ownership chain before submission.

Documents and foreign owners

The current MoET card requires a JPEG copy of the mark and, for a company or institution, its commercial licence. Additional documents depend on the mark type.

Where an owner outside the UAE applies, the service card requires filing through a registered trademark agent with a duly certified/notarised and legally translated power of attorney. Document production, certification and translation should therefore begin before the commercial launch date.

The registration sequence

1. File and pay examination

The applicant submits the owner, mark, goods/services and supporting documents and pays the examination fee. A filing receipt is not a registration certificate.

2. Examination and decision

The Ministry examines the application and may accept it, reject it or require a response. The latest indexed Register Trademark card, updated 28 June 2026, states 20 working days to study and issue a decision.

That figure should not be converted into a guaranteed end-to-end timeline. Other MoET registration URLs currently show 45 working days and also contain a 90-day procedural statement. The live service interface and the specific file status should be checked when the application is made.

3. Publication

After acceptance, the applicant pays AED 750 for publication in the official trademark bulletin. The current service card warns of a delay fine if the publication fee is not paid within 30 days of receiving the acceptance decision.

4. Opposition window

The opposition period is 30 days from issuance of the trademark bulletin. An opposition is a separate dispute track: the parties submit statements and evidence, and a hearing may follow.

An owner monitoring new filings needs a bulletin workflow. Learning of the mark after the 30-day administrative window can force a different and usually heavier route.

5. Final registration

After the opposition period ends without a blocking objection, or after the relevant dispute is resolved, the AED 5,000 final registration fee must be paid. The executive regulation sets a 30-day payment period after expiry of the opposition window. The current service card also lists delay fines for late final payment.

Under Federal Decree-Law No. 36 of 2021, trademark protection runs for ten years from the filing date and can be renewed for further periods under the applicable procedure.

What can delay or derail the filing?

• the owner name does not match the corporate documents or power of attorney;
• the goods/services specification is too broad, unclear or commercially wrong;
• the mark contains non-distinctive, prohibited or misleading material;
• an earlier right creates visual, phonetic or conceptual similarity;
• Arabic and Latin-script versions have not been considered together;
• publication or final fees are not paid in time;
• the applicant treats an inquiry as a complete clearance opinion;
• a transaction changes ownership while the application is pending.

Registration, opposition and enforcement are different tracks

Registration creates an asset and a basis for enforcement, but it does not monitor the market. Opposition addresses an accepted third-party application before registration. An infringement complaint, customs recordal, platform notice or court claim responds to conduct and uses different evidence.

Choosing the route starts with the event: a new application, an adverse decision, unauthorised use, imported goods or a portfolio expansion.

A filing-ready checklist

1. Confirm the owner and chain of title.
2. Select the word/logo versions that matter commercially.
3. Map current and near-term goods/services.
4. Run exact and similarity searches, including Arabic/transliteration issues.
5. Decide whether national or Madrid filing fits the wider portfolio.
6. Prepare the licence, mark image, priority documents and power of attorney.
7. Budget examination, publication and registration separately.
8. Calendar the acceptance, publication, opposition and final-payment stages.
9. Set up post-filing monitoring and evidence retention.
