Overview
The UAE does not have one general residence visa. The correct route depends on the legal basis: local employment, self-employment, investment, property, family, foreign remote work, study, retirement, talent or an exceptional environmental contribution. The route determines the sponsor, term, evidence, work position and rules for dependants.
A residence permit is not citizenship, permanent residence, a company licence, a guaranteed bank account or automatic UAE tax residence. Those questions require separate tests.
UAE residence-route comparison
| Route | Sponsor | Published term | Main eligibility basis | Work position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard work residence | UAE employer | Normally 2 years, renewable | Valid local employment and employer process | Tied to the applicable work/employment permissions |
| Green — skilled worker | Self-sponsored | 5 years, renewable | UAE contract, MOHRE skill level 1–3, bachelor's degree, salary of at least AED 15,000/month | For the qualifying skilled-worker basis; employment rules still apply |
| Green — freelancer/self-employed | Self-sponsored | 5 years, renewable | MOHRE freelance/self-employment permit, qualification and income/solvency evidence | For approved freelance/self-employed activity |
| Green — investor/business partner | Self-sponsored | 5 years, renewable | Investment/partnership in a UAE project plus licences and approvals | Business activity still needs the correct licence |
| Golden | Self-sponsored | 5 or 10 years depending on category/authority | Category-specific investment, property, talent, executive, science, entrepreneurship or student evidence | Residence does not replace professional, commercial or work permission |
| Blue | Self-sponsored | 10 years, renewable | Exceptional environmental, energy, sustainability or climate contribution within a listed category | Category recognition is not a general business licence |
| Virtual work | Self-sponsored | 1 year | Employment outside the UAE and salary evidence of USD 3,500 or equivalent | Designed for foreign remote employment, not ordinary local employment |
| Family | Resident family member | Cannot exceed sponsor's permit | Qualifying relationship, sponsor status, income/accommodation and documents | A dependant residence does not by itself settle work-authorisation requirements |
| Student | Parent or accredited institution | Course/authority-specific | Admission and institutional evidence | Study basis; work position must be checked separately |
| Retirement | Self-sponsored | 5 years | Authority-specific age/service and financial evidence | Residence basis, not a work or commercial licence |
The table is a routing tool, not an eligibility decision. Dubai and federal channels can publish different service conditions, and the receiving authority controls the application.
Standard work residence or Green Residence?
The UAE Government's work-residence page separates two common routes. A standard work residence is employer-sponsored and normally valid for two years. Green Residence is self-sponsored and lasts five years, but only for qualifying categories.
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) currently lists:
- skilled workers: a valid UAE employment contract, MOHRE occupational level 1–3, at least a bachelor's degree and salary of at least AED 15,000 per month;
- freelancers/self-employed: a MOHRE freelance or self-employment permit, a bachelor's degree or specialised diploma, and either financial solvency or annual freelance income of at least AED 360,000 during the previous two years; and
- investors/business partners: evidence of investment or partnership in a UAE project and the required licences and approvals.
Green Residence removes the need for a UAE sponsor for the residence itself. It does not remove licensing, professional or labour-law requirements for the activity performed.
What is Golden Residence?
Golden Residence is a category-based, self-sponsored long-term residence framework. It is not one investor product: the evidence differs for investors, property owners, entrepreneurs, scientists, exceptional talent, executives and qualifying students or graduates.
The category must be selected before documents or fees are quoted. A nomination or recommendation may be central in one category, while investment value, ownership, salary, qualifications or recognised achievements may control another.
The property route requires authority-specific checking
The current Dubai Land Department (DLD) investor service describes a ten-year renewable Dubai residence for property purchased at AED 2 million or more. But the same page is internally inconsistent for mortgaged property:
- its description requests a bank letter indicating AED 2 million paid; while
- its service terms ask the bank letter to show the paid amount and outstanding balance.
Federal and local materials have also described different terms for real-estate investors. A mortgaged-property applicant should therefore obtain confirmation from the actual DLD/GDRFA/ICP channel before relying on the favourable interpretation. This page does not promise eligibility based only on the title-deed value.
What is Blue Residence?
Blue Residence is a ten-year, renewable, self-sponsored UAE residence for specified people with exceptional contributions in environmental protection, energy, sustainability or climate-related fields.
The ICP Blue Residence page says the programme launched in 2024 and permits self-application or nomination. It lists distinguished influencers, scientists and researchers, investors and entrepreneurs, inventors and innovators, and elite specialists in environmental institutions.
The route is evidence-heavy. Depending on category, ICP may require nomination or recommendation, recognised achievements, qualifications, research metrics, investment, ownership, project approval or institutional records. Working “in sustainability” is not by itself the statutory test.
Virtual work residence
The UAE virtual-work route is a one-year, self-sponsored residence for a person employed outside the UAE. The ICP service card asks for proof of foreign remote employment and a salary certificate of at least USD 3,500 or its equivalent.
This route answers “Can I live in the UAE while working remotely for a foreign employer?” It should not be presented as permission to take ordinary employment with a UAE employer or to conduct a locally licensed business without the required permissions.
Family-sponsored residence
The UAE Government family-residence page states that a resident sponsor generally needs monthly income of at least AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation. It describes sponsorship of a spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25 and children with special needs, subject to the applicable conditions and evidence.
The dependant's permit cannot outlast the sponsor's permit. If the sponsor's residence is cancelled, dependant status must be dealt with as well. Family residence and permission to work are related but separate questions.
Student residence
A student may be sponsored by a resident parent or by the accredited university or college, according to the UAE Government's student-residence guidance. Outstanding students may qualify under a separate Golden category.
The admission letter and course duration support the study basis. The permit should not be described as an unrestricted work route; any employment or internship arrangement needs its own check.
Retirement residence: resolve the official conflict first
The long-term retirement route is published as a five-year residence, but the official eligibility wording is not uniform.
- The UAE Government retirement page states that the applicant must be at least 55 and have worked for at least 15 years, then meet a stated financial condition.
- The current ICP residence service documentation accepts a retirement certificate after 15 years or a birth certificate showing age 55 as category evidence.
That AND/OR difference can change the outcome. The application should be tested against the live ICP or GDRFA service card for the selected emirate and channel; a comparison article should not silently choose one version.
How does property-based residence differ from company residence?
Property, company and employment are separate legal bases. Buying property does not automatically create a company or work permission. Incorporating a company does not automatically meet a Golden property threshold. Employment residence depends on the employer/work process rather than share ownership alone.
Choose the basis that matches the real purpose, then check whether a separate licence or work authorisation is also needed.
Can a UAE resident stay abroad for more than 180 days?
The general rule has exceptions, so “every UAE visa expires after six months abroad” is inaccurate. The UAE Government's general residence provisions describe a general 180-day rule and multiple exceptions. They expressly say Golden and Green holders can return while their residence remains valid without using the over-six-month entry-permit service.
The answer depends on the route, issuing authority and current validity. Travel planning should be checked before a long absence, particularly for standard sponsored, family, study, retirement and virtual-work permits.
What happens after route approval?
The exact sequence varies, but a residence file commonly moves through:
- Route and authority confirmation. Identify the category, emirate and ICP/GDRFA or other competent channel.
- Category approval or sponsor process. Obtain nomination, employer, family, property, investment or institutional evidence where required.
- Entry or status step. Follow the service route for an applicant abroad or already inside the UAE.
- Medical fitness. Adult applicants generally complete the applicable medical-fitness process.
- Biometrics and Emirates ID. Submit the identity application and biometrics where required.
- Residence issuance. Check the issued category, term and dependant linkage.
- Ongoing compliance. Maintain insurance and underlying eligibility, renew on time and report or process material changes.
Fees should be taken from the live service card for the selected channel. The UAE Government's fee page directs users to ICP and GDRFA service cards rather than publishing one universal total. Medical, Emirates ID, insurance, status adjustment, translation, attestation and service-centre charges may sit on different lines.
What a UAE residence permit does not prove
- Tax residence: corporate-tax residence and individual tax-residency-certificate tests are separate.
- Citizenship: a renewable 5- or 10-year residence is not citizenship or automatic permanent residence.
- Bank approval: banks perform their own KYC and risk assessment.
- Company authority: a residence permit is not a trade licence.
- Unlimited work rights: the immigration basis does not replace applicable labour, professional and commercial permissions.
Frequently asked questions
Which UAE residence visa is best?
There is no universally best route. The suitable route is the one whose legal basis matches the facts: employer, self-employment, investment, property, family, foreign remote work, study, retirement, talent or environmental contribution.
Is Golden Visa always valid for ten years?
No. The published term depends on category and authority. Some Golden categories and the current Dubai property service use ten years, while official federal materials have described a five-year real-estate-investor term. Confirm the selected route and channel.
Does a UAE residence visa make me a tax resident?
Not automatically. Immigration residence and tax residence are different legal questions. Tax treatment depends on the applicable UAE and foreign tax rules, treaty position and the facts required for any tax-residency certificate.
Can I work in the UAE on any residence visa?
Not necessarily. Residence allows lawful residence under its category; the work, professional or commercial activity may require a work permit, employer process, professional approval or trade licence.
Does a UAE residence visa guarantee a bank account?
No. Residence can be part of the bank's evidence, but the bank separately reviews ownership, source of funds and wealth, activity, counterparties, expected transactions, sanctions and risk appetite.
Do all UAE residence visas become invalid after 180 days abroad?
No. A general 180-day rule exists, but official guidance lists exceptions and expressly treats Golden and Green holders differently while their residence remains valid. Check the exact route and authority before a long absence.
